Fans of James Marsters’s bad boy Captain John Hart from Torchwood have plenty to be excited about in 2020, as he gets his own audio spin-off, The Sins of Captain John!
One of the best creations in Torchwood was definitely Captain John Hart. Like Captain Jack, but with absolutely none of the morals, Captain John was an incredibly fun character to watch. Ruthless and with absolutely no moral core, you still couldn’t help but love the character, thanks to great writing from Chris Chibnall and a strong performance from James Marsters.
So when Big Finish brought him back earlier this year in The Death of Captain Jack, it was of course an absolute joy to listen to. It was like Torchwood‘s version of Turn Left: darker, more twisted, but surprisingly more fun, it was a fantastic reintroduction to the character.
So if you enjoyed The Death of Captain Jack, then you’re going to love Big Finish’s latest announcement. In 2020, a brand new four-story box set will be released: The Sins of Captain John! This looks set to give us plenty more of the evil rogue, and James Marsters couldn’t be happier about it.
"Doing The Death of Captain Jack was incredible! I have missed doing Torchwood so much. Beyond being proud of playing a part in it, the character itself is a blast to play, and those two episodes just weren’t enough."
Across four episodes, Captain John Hart will get up to all kinds of mischief. But what exactly can we expect from his own series?

Writer David Llewellyn (who also wrote The Death of Captain Jack) gives us an idea of what to expect from this box set.
"Captain John is this chaotic, disruptive, insubordinate force of nature; completely amoral and unpredictable, so that gave me a lot of freedom! Writing is often a case of knowing when to hold back, when to tread a more subtle line, but with Captain John it’s the complete opposite. And setting it before Torchwood on television meant we were able to go to places where Torchwood can’t."
Now this already sounds very intriguing. We’ve already been given a great glimpse of pre-Torchwood Captain John in The Death of Captain Jack, but this series looks set to take that concept even further.
When we first saw him in Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, he was already a ruthless character, killing Captain Jack, a man he practically loved, before he had any idea he was immortal. What terrible deeds did Captain John do before then? Particularly when he was away from Jack’s more moral influence? We can’t wait to find out.
The Sins of Captain John is available to pre-order now on CD and download from Big Finish’s website.
