Doctor Who: Return of old enemy virtually confirmed in new teaser
By James Aggas
The BBC have kept very quiet about who’s the main enemy in the Doctor Who New Year’s Day special. But their latest teaser has given us the strongest hint yet…
For the first time since 2004, it’s a Christmas Day without a brand new Doctor Who Christmas special to look forward. Honestly, it’s sad and disappointing, particularly as watching it with the family has always been a highlight for many. But on the plus side, at least there’s the New Year’s Day special to be excited about.
Little has been revealed about Resolution so far. We know that it’ll feature the same team as for Series Eleven, with the Thirteenth Doctor, Ryan, Yasmin and Graham in a brand new adventure. We know that it’ll take place across Earth’s history, too.
But that’s it. We don’t even know who the main enemy will be. We suspect, but we don’t know for sure.
However, for us Whovians, that’s now changed, thanks to a brand new teaser. There’s no actual new footage in this one. In fact, it’s only ten seconds long. But there is one word heard. Just one word to confirm what we’ve all suspected. Listen to it in the teaser below.
Confirmation
Now, we’ve yet to hear the BBC officially confirm that the Daleks are back, as previously rumored. But hearing them say “Exterminate!” in the new teaser is as good a confirmation as any. Certainly, it’s sure to get the Whovians talking about it in the week leading up to their next appearance.
It’s also got me thinking about how deliberate that title is. Resolution. Now, admittedly, the first thing we think of is, with it a being a New Year’s Day special and all, a New Year’s resolution.

But what if it’s a nod to something else, too? Such as, for example, Eighties Dalek stories?
With the exception of Destiny to the Daleks, all the Dalek stories in the Eighties had titles that began with “re”. So, we had Resurrection of the Daleks, Revelation of the Daleks, and Remembrance of the Daleks.
It’s not hard to imagine Chris Chibnall making a nod to those stories, particularly as that would’ve been the era of Doctor Who that he would’ve grown up with. It’s also not hard to imagine a title like Resolution of the Daleks.
One more thing those stories had in common: Davros. Could we expect an appearance from him in this special, too? This is completely baseless speculation, of course, but it wouldn’t be the first time that he made a surprise return.
Resolution will be broadcast on BBC One in the UK and on BBC America in the US on New Year’s Day.
