Netflix drops a Black Mirror movie tomorrow—Watch the trailer

Black Mirror, a sci-fi anthology show that began on the BBC but continues on Netflix, has been a consistent hit for the streaming platform. Of late, creator Charlie Brooker has been getting more ambitious with his ideas. For example, when I watched The season 4 premiere — “USS Callister,” a grimly funny sendup of the first Star Trek series — I thought that if they had just added another 20 minutes of content, it would have been better than most of the genre fare I see in movie theater.

It sounds like Brooker is thinking along those lines, because Netflix is dropping a proper Black Mirror movie tomorrow. It’s called Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, and it’s about a programmer in the 1980s who’s adapting a sprawling sci-fi novel as a video game. He encounters some problems. Watch the trailer.

USS Callister” was also about the real world colliding with the fake world inside a video game, so this is fertile ground. And the movie is set in the ’80s, which recalls another of Netflix’s monster hits: Stranger Things. It also kind of reminds me of Ready Player One, what with the author of the original story looming the background. There’s a whole lot of influences in here. Let’s see what Black Mirror does with them.

That’s young British actor Fionn Whitehead as Stefan, the programmer at the center of the story.
