It’s official: a Batwoman series is coming to The CW. It will join the network’s many-pronged Arrowverse, which also includes shows like SupergirlThe Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow. Veteran Game of Thrones director David Nutter (the guy behind the Red Wedding and Cersei’s Walk of Shame, as well as three episodes for season 8) helped get The Flash and Arrow off the ground back in the day.  Now, Entertainment Weekly reports that he’ll be directing the pilot for the Batwoman show as well.

Orange Is the New Black alum Ruby Rose will play Kate Kane/Batwoman, who made her debut in the Arrowverse during the Elseworlds crossover event. Here’s the synopsis for her show:

"Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (star Ruby Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope."

Batwoman didn’t have a huge role in the Elseworlds crossover, but her appearance made some waves, in part because she brought Gotham City into the Arrowverse and name-dropped Batman/Bruce Wayne’s name a fair bit, as well as showing us Arkham Asylum, where some of Gotham’s most notorious criminals are held.

Moving forward, The CW’s should be mindful that Batwoman not become another Arrow, which is starting to show signs of wear and tear in its seventh season. Honestly, I wonder how long Arrow and Batwoman can share the same network seeing as the Green Arrow has always been the discount version of Batman. Then again, since Warner Bros. apparently isn’t allowing Batman to appear in the Arrowverse, maybe that’s not a problem.
