What did Missy get up to when the Doctor wasn’t around to stop her? We’ll find out next month in Missy: The Audio Adventures!

With just a month to go until the release of her brand new series, Big Finish have released exciting story details for the Doctor Who spin-off, Missy!
Back in September, Big Finish revealed a brand new spin-off to look forward to: Missy: The Audio Adventures. As you can guess from the title, the series will feature the incarnation of the Doctor’s greatest enemy as played by Michelle Gomez.
We saw her get up to a lot throughout Peter Capaldi’s era. But what did she get up to when the Doctor wasn’t around? That’s the question that this spin-off is going to answer next month.
Up until today, Big Finish have revealed few details about the series, other than a cover and a trailer. But now, some story details have been revealed. And they sound very exciting.
"1.1 A Spoonful of Mayhem by Roy GillIn a spot of bother in Victorian London, Missy is forced to take on governess duties. But she has another scheme in mind, and her charges are simply in the way. She’s going to have to teach the children some rather harsh lessons about getting what you want. And there will be tears before bedtime."
I love the idea of this episode. We had seen Missy act like a nanny in the television series. In fact, let’s be honest: she was meant to be as close to Mary Poppins’s evil twin as possible. If that wasn’t obvious with her look and her attitude, then her flying on an umbrella in Death in Heaven certainly was!
And yet, oddly enough, we actually never saw her take charge as a nanny. So it’s great to know that the first episode of her own series will force her into this role. But why? And what scheme will she be up to?
Since 2015, Rufus Hound’s incarnation of the Monk has been delightful to listen to. But will even he be able to survive when he meets Missy?

Missy versus the Monk
If there’s an episode that I’m most excited about, then it has to be episode two. Not just because it’s written by John Dorney – one of the very best writers at Big Finish – but also because of the other Time Lord it features: the Monk.
"1.2 Divorced, Beheaded, Regenerated by John DorneyMissy arrives in Tudor England, throwing the plans of another renegade Time Lord into chaos. King Henry VIII is on the throne, and aliens are stomping through the countryside.Missy just wants to be Queen. And the Monk? Once he knows who else is on the scene, he’ll be glad just to stay alive…"
Since 2015, Rufus Hound’s Monk has been a real highlight in Big Finish’s Doctor Who universe. The Monk is a very tricky character to get right – he should be an antagonist, but the writers need to remember that he’s not the Master or the Rani. He’s not out to take over the universe. He just wants to improve it, when he can. That, plus maybe make some money along the way.
Rufus Hound has helped to bring the Monk to life since the excellent Second Doctor audio The Black Hole. He brings a lot of cheekiness and charm to the role, which is exactly what you want in a character like the Monk.
So the Monk in the same story as the Master – something that’s never happened before – is definitely an exciting prospect. I do hope that they’re already aware of each other, as I would love for the Monk to meet other incarnations of one of the universe’s most dangerous psychopaths.
The Broken Clock will have Missy track down a serial killer. But what’s “D.I. Missy Masters” really up to?

Missy on TV! (On audio)
The third episode sounds like it’ll be a lot of fun. Which isn’t surprising, as it’s written by Nev Fountain. Fun is one of the three things that you can expect from his stories. (We’ll get to the other two in a moment.)
"1.3 The Broken Clock by Nev FountainTonight, on Dick Zodiac’s America’s Most Impossible Killers, Detective Joe Lynwood hunts the most impossible killer of his career. There’s a trail of bodies. Impossible bodies. And Joe has one long night to solve the case. Luckily, D.I. Missy Masters from Scotland Yard in London, England is here to help…"
So Missy will be appearing on a crime series. But why? What’s she really up to in this one? And is that alias the most obvious one she’s used yet?
I’ve mentioned that there are three things we can expect from Nev Fountain’s scripts. The first one is fun, which I’m sure we’ll get with this story. The second element is a very quirky sense of humor. We can usually expect something at least a little bizarre in his stories, and Missy appearing in a reality TV series is exactly his sort of style.
The last element? Tragedy. It will usually be saved for the end, but many of his stories, after providing a lot of fun and jolly moments, punch you in the gut at the very end. And with a series where Missy is the protagonist, I’m sure we can expect a lot of tragedy on the way…
Finale
So how will this box set end? Well, perhaps unsurprisingly, it sounds like Missy has something big planned for the finale.
"1.4 The Belly of the Beast by Jonathan MorrisMissy’s scheme nears completion. All she must do is subjugate one little planet and bend the inhabitants to her will. Not too much to ask…But slaves will keep rebelling. It’s almost as if they don’t want to unearth an ancient artifact to fulfill Missy’s plans for universal domination. She’ll have to do something about that."
More from Winter is Coming
- For All Mankind finally gives us information in Episode 405, “Goldilocks”
- Watch a stunning VFX breakdown of The Wheel of Time season 2
- Of course Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) thinks Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen) should rule Westeros
- Confirmed: The Last of Us season 2 will air in 2025
- Final season of Star Trek: Discovery will have “a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of fun”
It sounds like this story could give us Missy at her most openly nasty. I expect she’ll be using her best methods of manipulation and deceit for the first three episodes. But the finale? Well, controlling one little world, having slaves and working towards universal domination suggests that the gloves are coming off for The Belly of the Beast. I’m definitely looking forward to hearing Missy unleashed.
In fact, I’m looking forward to the whole box set. Big Finish has consistently given us high quality spin-offs over the years. (The Diary of River Song is just one of many excellent examples.) With an excellent writing team on board, I’m sure Missy will be a worthy addition.
Especially since this won’t be the first spin-off series that they’ve given to the Master, either. If you haven’t checked out The War Master yet, I strongly recommend doing so. Derek Jacobi is amazing in the role, and better still, the writers don’t shy away from the nastiness of the character.
With all this to look forward to – plus Missy meeting River later this month – Missy promises to be a very exciting new series.
Are you looking forward to hearing Missy in her own spin-off series? Is there anything you’re hoping to hear in the series? Let us know in the comments below.
