Pop quiz: It’s the middle of January and you’ve just watched a new promo for the final season of Game of Thrones. What do you do? If you’re one of several million fans social media, you tweet HBO asking for a proper, full-length trailer.
Fear not, as showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss definitely do plan on releasing one between now and April 14. However, speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the duo implied that if they had their way, things might be different. “ was saying he wished there were no trailers,” Benioff said. “And it’s true, you could just go into a movie and see something completely fresh.”
Benioff was referring to a Polygon article from 2017, where Lynch criticized the trend of trailers giving away too much about a film before it hits theaters. “For me, personally, I don’t want to know anything when I go into a theater,” Lynch said. “I like to discover it, get into that world, try to get as good of picture and sound as possible, no interruptions — so you can have an experience. And anything that putrefies that is not good.”
Dan Weiss echoed that sentiment. “I wish there were no trailers. I just want somebody to say, ‘Trust me, go see this.'”
If any show on television could get away with not showing a trailer, it would be Game of Thrones. The fans would hate it, though, and luckily, Weiss sees their point. “e went and saw Ready Player One with our kids and they played the Westworld trailer and it looked great,” he remembered. “And we’re like, ‘Ah, we should do that.'”

At this point, we’ve gotten footage of Jon hugging Sansa at Winterfell, the “Dragonstone” promo, the Golden Globes footage featuring Sansa and Daenerys meeting for the first time, and Sunday night’s “Crypts of Winterfell” promo. A trailer has to be next. So what’s the holdup? James Hibberd, EW’s Game of Thrones point man, posits that Thrones is so huge that Benioff and Weiss don’t need to release anything this far out of the season premiere. He thinks we’ll get one full trailer and then a few short clips.
If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say we’ll get a full trailer for season 8 around the middle of February. Don’t fret folks, the end is nigh.
