Doctor Who: Filming has officially begun for Series Twelve
By James Aggas
We may have a year to wait to see it, but following the release of a brand new photo, filming has already begun for Series Twelve of Doctor Who.
Earlier this week, Doctor Who‘s official Twitter account released a photo. This image not only features all the regulars from Series Eleven – including Jodie Whittaker, Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill, and Tosin Cole. It also came with an announcement:
"Doctor Who is back in production!"
There is something reassuring about that. It’s going to be a long wait for the next series, so it is good to know that, just a few weeks into the new year, the team are already working on Series Twelve.
Unsurprisingly, it’s continuing with the entire main cast of Series Eleven. When reviewing the episodes, many of us wondered if a team of four was really a good idea. It can be difficult to give each of the companions their equal share of the story, and at least one of them can be very easily pushed to one side, in terms of the narrative.
Graham and the Doctor
More from Winter is Coming
- For All Mankind finally gives us information in Episode 405, “Goldilocks”
- Watch a stunning VFX breakdown of The Wheel of Time season 2
- Of course Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) thinks Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen) should rule Westeros
- Confirmed: The Last of Us season 2 will air in 2025
- Final season of Star Trek: Discovery will have “a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of fun”
On the plus side, it’s definitely reassuring to know that Bradley Walsh is still in the series as Graham. During Series Eleven, he emerged as one of the show’s best characters. This was due to both excellent writing, and of course, Walsh’s performance. So more of Graham is definitely a good thing.
As for Whittaker? Well, it would’ve been a major surprise if she wasn’t in it. I do look forward to seeing more of her Doctor next year, but I hope the writing does a better job of handling her character.
So far, we’ve only seen surface details of her Doctor, and no story has really explored what makes her Doctor tick, or given us a huge amount of depth, as with previous Doctors. One thing I enjoyed with Capaldi’s Doctor was that the writing was always keen to show us exactly how he thinks and feels, especially when he was pushed to the edge. I’m not sure we got enough of that with Whittaker’s Doctor last year, and I hope that changes.
Regardless, knowing that more Doctor Who episodes are coming is definitely reassuring. I look forward to seeing what Series Twelve will bring.
