Welcome to A Song of Dan and Josh, the show where myself and Joshua Hill talk through each and every chapter of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, breaking them down to discover what makes them tick.

This week, we’re diving deep into “Tyrion I,” the first Tyrion chapter from A Clash of Kings. Watch below:

Things get kind of abstract on this one. Our topics include:

  • Ser Mandon Moore of the Kingsguard either shows a lot of good sense or gets really lucky in the opening moments of this chapter.
  • This chapter is one long game of one-upmanship. Tyrion puts one over on Cersei, and then on Joffrey, and then on Varys…but does he? Climbing the ladder of power is a precarious business, and there are loose rungs every other step. We get into a pretty weird discussion about the nature of power, and how to wield it. I blame Varys’ riddle. It started this.
  • Josh Hill: “I am 100% against incest.” You’ll have to watch to get the context.
  • What exactly are Tyrion’s feelings towards Shae here? Lustful love or loving lust?

A Clash of Kings is a really good book. I can’t wait to get to more Tyrion stuff.
