Maisie Williams: “I’m okay with being known as Arya forever”

Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) reflecting back on her time with Game of Thrones while at Birmingham City University to launch her new social media app, Daisie. About the ending, she said she hopes fans “really like it.”

"I’m really proud of what we’ve done, but I ultimately don’t think anyone is ready for the show to finish. I think it’s going to be very unexpected."

Looking beyond Game of Thrones, Williams grappled with the possibility that she’ll be known as the girl who played Arya Stark for the rest of her career, and she’s at peace with it. “In terms of what I want to go on and do, I guess I’m okay with being known as Arya forever.”

"I’m not mad with this show being the best thing I ever do – it changed the game for television and it’s unlike anything we’ve really seen before and it reached audiences that this style of drama has never reached before. I’m not mad if this is as good as it gets – it was pretty bloody good."

Hear, hear. “She was an iconic character,” Williams continued. “[T]here weren’t any girls written like that and since there have been younger characters written in this way but… now when I read scripts I realize how special she was. I hope I do other things but I hope I never do anything like Arya again because she was in a league of her own.”

That strikes us as a pretty healthy way for Williams to approach her post-Thrones career. She will assuredly be known as Arya for a while; you can see the influence in some of her upcoming roles, like Wolfsbane in New Mutants. She’s playing a werewolf character in an X-Men  movie? Tell me some executive at Fox didn’t watch her on Game of Thrones before coming up with that casting idea.

But she’s more than talented enough to separate herself from Arya if she wants to going forward — plenty of big stars started on TV but carved out careers in other spaces afterwards — and with stuff like Daisie, it’s clear Williams isn’t putting all of her eggs in the acting basket anyway. She’s got a bright future ahead of her, but for now, we’re just looking forward to seeing what trouble Arya gets up when the final season of Game of Thrones drops April 14.
