Oscar Isaac and Zendaya in talks to play major roles in Dune movie

Legendary Entertainment’s Dune movie, from Arrival director Denis Villeneuve, just keeps looking better. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Star Wars star Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron) is in talks to play the role of Duke Leto Atreides, head of House Atreides and father to lead character Paul.

Warning: SPOILERS for the first Dune novel ahead.

In Frank Herbert’s Dune novels, Duke Leto is described as a tall man with an olive complexion and black hair. Leto ruled his homeworld of Caladan before the Emperor sent him to Arrakis (Dune). It was on Caladan that Duke Leto took Lady Jessica as his paramour. She later gave birth to their son, Paul.

Isaac isn’t the only actor Villeneuve is looking at. Per Collider, singer/actress Zendaya (Spider-Man: Homecoming) is in talks to play Chani. In the books, Chani is a fierce Freman warrior who falls in love with Paul Atreides and eventually bears him a son who is later murdered by soldiers from House Corrino. Undeterred, Chani and Paul try for children again, and this time she gives birth to twins.

Although Paul and Chani are deeply in love, because of his status, Paul cannot officially marry her, so by the end of the first Dune novel, Chani’s title is Imperial Concubine.

Both Oscar Isaac and Zendaya fit the description of their characters perfectly. If negotiations are successful, the two will join Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, Stellan Skarsgård as the ludicrously obese and sadistic Baron Harkonnen, Dave Bautista as Glossu “the Beast” Rabban Harkonnen, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, and Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides.

We don’t yet know when production will officially start on Dune, but we do know the first film will only cover the first half of the first book. What do you think of this latest casting news?
