Let’s overanalyze the new teaser for Avengers: Endgame

Last night, during the Super Bowl, Disney dropped some new footage from Avengers: Endgame. None of it is reassuring. If you haven’t watched the ad yet, check it out below!

The teaser opens with a couple shots of New York City shrouded in a blue haze, looking eerie after half its population was wiped out in the Snappening. Interestingly, the area around the Statue of Liberty seems to be unusually crowded with boats.

Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, looks to be in a kind of support group (“Where do we go, now that they’re gone?”), because watching people disintegrate in front of you after you failed to stop a mad titan from killing half the living beings in the universe is stressful. But the voiceover makes it clear that the Avengers have not moved on from what has happened. Despite the odds, they’ve working at something, whether it’s something to undo the Snappening, find Thanos, or both. They’re the Avengers; they’re not going to be idle.

Last we saw Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, he was stranded in space. We speculated on ways he might be rescued, but we missed an obvious one: what if Nebula, the space-faring daugter of Thanos, helps him out? They already met in Infinity War, and in this footage, at least, the two are together:

It looks like Tony and Nebula are working on something, although without knowing when this happens — does this happen before Tony’s despondent monologue from the first trailer or after? — it’s hard to know what. Note that he’s wearing the same outfit here as in the trailer:

I wouldn’t put it past Marvel to play this scene for comedy; Tony is out of food and is about to run out of oxygen, and then someone immediately saves him or he realizes how to save himself. If you look closely at the new footage, Nebula has her left leg propped up; it looks like she’s trying to put a part of herself back together or wrench a part of herself free. Remember how Thanos, the universe’s best dad, tortured her by replacing parts of her body with machinery. Perhaps she helps Tony by disassembling part of herself to provide him with tech he needs?

Next, we have a shot is Steve, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), Bruce Banner (the Hulk) and James Rhodes (War Machine, now walking on his own with a prosthetic leg) outside Avenger’s Headquarters, looking up at the sky. Natasha’s hair is still short and blonde, just a little longer than in Infinity War, so I would say that this particular scene takes place not too long after the Snappening. (The next time she appears in the teaser, her hair is longer.) Could they be looking up at the arrival of Captain Marvel?

Next we have a couple of quick shots, including one of Natasha on an indoor shooting range with a body of water visible in the background. Her hair is longer now, basically confirming that Endgame will skip forward in time somewhat. Rocket Raccoon also makes an appearance sporting his classic suit from the comics, although it’s hard exactly where he is. I’d guess that both of them are at Avengers headquarters in Upstate New York.

Next, both Rhodey and Scott Lang (Ant-Man) suit up, so we can assume they’re being confronted by someone unfamiliar, either a baddie or a friend they haven’t met yet. They can’t possibly introduce any new villains at this point, can they?

Thor, standing in a tunnel of sorts, is still angry and sad. He may be standing in the remnants of a Wakandan structure, or that could be Thanos’ little chalet we saw at the end of Infinity War.

We get a brief glimpse of Ronin, formerly Hawkeye, aka Clint Barton, but there’s not much to say about it except that he looks angry and sad, which are two popular emotions in this teaser. Will his darker side come to the fore in this movie?

Another important observation: Captain America has his shield back. Remember when he “gave” it to Tony and walked away at the end of Captain America: Civil War? It made a cameo in Spiderman: Homecoming — Happy mentioned Captain America’s new shield while transporting weapons from the Avengers Tower to the team’s new headquarters — but it’s been a while since it’s been back with its owner. True, Rogers did have a shield in Infinity War, but that one was made by the Wakandans.

Anyway, we see the shield in a brief shot where Cap’s hand shakes as he tightens the shield around his arm. Once again, guy may have trauma in the aftermath of the Snappening. Wouldn’t you?

Finally, we see the remaining Avengers, in their suits, walking in a line through a hanger or warehouse, silhouetted against a sunset…or sunrise. Perhaps they’re on their way to rescue Tony, or confront Thanos. Captain America is in the lead, followed by Thor, Natasha (with long hair), Rocket, Scott Lang, Rhodey and Bruce Banner. Point of observation: Rhodey’s suit looks a little darker here, but it could be the light.

There’s still a ton we don’t know, but more information will probably come to light with the release of Captain Marvel on March 8. Then it’s on to Endgame on April 26!
