Uhtred rides his new “battle stallion” in preparation for The Last Kingdom season 4

It’s going to be very hard for any show to replace Game of Thrones in our hearts when HBO’s game-changing hit concludes later this year, but Netflix The Last Kingdom, a medieval historical drama based on Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories, could at least help ease the pain. The fourth season is in production now, and the show’s official Twitter account constantly gives fans updates. The latest features Alexander Dreymon — who plays lead character Uhtred of Bebbanburg — training with his new “battle stallion”:

Pedro is a showy horse, what with that leg raised and ready for some high-stepping. Dance on, Pedro.

Dreymon and company have a big task ahead of them, as the third season of the show raised the bar over what had come before. The show is getting splashier, denser, and more visually splendid. Here’s hoping Netflix keeps the momentum going.

We don’t know when season 4 will debut on Netflix, but if Dreymon and company are already up to horse-training, production is at least underway. There was a one-year break between seasons 1 and 2, but the third season debuted a year after the second. With the show’s popularity growing, hopefully we’ll see the fourth season sometime this year. Saddle up, arselings.
