Doctor Who: Missy’s brand new spin-off series begins today!

We saw her get up to plenty of mischief and villainy during Peter Capaldi’s era of Doctor Who. Now, we’re going to find out what she got up to on her own, as the first series of Missy is released today!

This is a release that I’ve been waiting for for quite a while. Ever since it was announced last year, this was a Doctor Who spin-off that sounded like an incredibly exciting idea. Today, we don’t need to wait any longer, as Missy: Series One is finally out on CD and download!

There are a few reasons why this box set should be brilliant. The first is Michelle Gomez herself. Personally, I think Gomez’s performance as Missy was one of the greatest things about the character. She clearly had a lot of fun with the role, and I’m sure she’ll continue having fun with it in her own series.

In fact, it’s a key reason why I haven’t rushed to read The Missy Chronicles. Not that I have no interest in reading it at all, and I certainly plan on giving it a read at some point.

But Gomez brought so much to Missy. She’s a huge part of what makes the character so brilliant. So getting to hear a lot more from her is already fantastic. (Especially when it’s only been a short while since we’ve last heard from her.)

Strong writing team

There’s also the strong team of writers that this box set has, too. I’ve already written about how exciting the stories sound in this box set. Roy Gill, John Dorney and Jonathan Morris have all written brilliant stories for Big Finish in the past, which is already promising.

But most exciting of all is that Nev Fountain has also written a script for this box set. He’s not as regular a writer for Big Finish, but he’s given us some of the best Doctor Who stories in any medium ever. So his story, The Broken Clock, is one that I’m particularly looking forward to listening to.

Lastly, one of the clearest indications that Missy – a series that featured one of the Doctor’s worst enemies as a protagonist – could actually work was because of the fact that Big Finish have done it before. And it was brilliant. Out of the many, many Doctor Who spin-offs that Big Finish have given us over the years, The War Master has to be one of the very best.

Will I enjoy Missy quite as much? Maybe not. Derek Jacobi’s War Master was more subtle and menacing, and the exploration of the Time War is always incredibly exciting for this fan.

But that certainly doesn’t mean that I won’t enjoy this set at all. Far from it. With Michelle Gomez in the lead and us finding out exactly what Missy got up to when the Doctor wasn’t around, this is a spin-off that looks set to be a lot of fun.
