Avengers: Endgame is probably going to be three hours long

Avengers: Endgame hits theaters in under just three months, but the epic conclusion to 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War has been over 10 years in the making. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue, it’s going to enter a new phase, and there’s a real possibility that Endgame will be the last time we see several of our favorite characters.

But by the sound of it, at least they’ll get a meaty sendoff. Back in November, the working of the movie was clocking in at around three hours, but given how much time there was to go before the big opening, a lot of people assumed it would be cut down before then.

Or maybe not. Speaking to Collider, directors Joe and Anthony Russo confirmed that Avengers: Endgame is still on track to become the longest MCU movie to date. “We’re still at the three-hour mark,” Joe Russo said. For comparison’s sake, Avengers: Infinity War runs 2 hours and 40 minutes.

"I think the studio is down with what the best story is. Right now, we think the movie is playing well and we’ve had great responses from our test audiences and we’re feeling very good about where it is…When you have to tell a really complicated story and you want strong emotional moments with the characters, it just requires a certain amount of real estate. This one, in particular, feels like three hours worth of real estate."

Endgame is the culmination of 22 Marvel movies, and if it takes three hours to properly explore the weight of all the feelings involved, that’s fine with us. Thanos wiped out half the universe with a snap of his fingers. The characters aren’t going to get over that (or undo it) in a half-hour.

Sidenote: how do we sign up to be part of one of these test audiences the Russos talk about? “We have screened the movie four times for audiences now,” Anthony Russo said. “For the first three screenings, not a single person got up to go to the bathroom.”

Avengers: Endgame releases on April 26.
