Not that long ago, we got the first official images from Tolkien, a biopic about The Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien. Now, Fox has released a trailer. Watch below!
“It’s about fellowship.” See what they did there?
That’s Nicholas Hoult (Beast from the X-Men movies, Nux in Mad Max: Fury Road) as Tolkien in his younger days, while he was at Oxford and fighting in World War I. There’s been quite a lot written about how Tolkien’s experiences in World War I influenced his writing — he was at the Battle of the Somme, one of the war’s most infamously harrowing fights — and it looks like the movie will underline that connection, with the ragged, smokey landscapes of France at war transforming in Tolkien’s imagination to the craggy plains of Mordor.

Or at least that’s how I’m reading it. Anyway, the trailer looks pretty good! Tolkien hits theaters on May 10.
We’re going through a bit of a J.R.R. Tolkien revival at the moment. In addition to the biopic, there’s an exhibit dedicated to the author’s work on display at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City right now. And of course, Amazon is spending an ungodly amount of money to make its own Lord of the Rings show, which is probably going to revolve around the adventures of a young Aragorn. As a longtime Lord of the Rings fan, I’m happy to forget those crappy Hobbit movies ever happened and embrace the new.
