Whoopi Goldberg once lobbied to be the first female Doctor Who

Long before Jodie Whittaker took the mantle as the first female Doctor on Doctor Who, there was someone else lobbying for that role: Whoopi Goldberg. The actress and comedian is a huge fan of the BBC series and at one point wanted nothing more than to be the first woman to take on a role played by men for its first 50 years. She revealed this bit of trivia during an episode of David Tennant’s new podcast, the accurately titled “David Tennant Does a Podcast.”

"I wanted to be the first female Doctor … the American version of Doctor Who ends up in New York and it’s me. The idea of that so made me happy. But they were like ‘Um no.’ I was like, ‘OK, I’m cool. I understand.’"

I have to wonder when Goldberg made this pitch. Goldberg was active back in the ’80s, before Doctor Who went on hiatus in 1989. She could have talked to the BBC then, or waited until after it was revived in 2005. A question for the next podcast.

Goldberg said that she still wants to come on the show, even for a cameo. “I always hope when I come to England the BBC will say, ‘Hey we want you to do something,’” she told The Sun back in 2017. “I would love that.” Now that this story has blown up, something tells us she’ll show up before too long. Let this legendary icon on on the show already!

Goldberg is a science fiction fan from way back, one of her most notable roles being Guinan on Star Trek: The Next Generation. “I always felt like science-fiction predicted the future,” she said. “Whether it was climate change, hand computers or being able to move around in different dimensions.” Or fighting Daleks alongside Cleopatra and Woodrow Wilson or something? All valid options.
