Aquaman has made a splash (pun so intended) at the box office, racking up around $1.2 billion since its debut in December. Given the tumultuous rollercoaster ride the DC Extended Universe has been on these past few years, Aquaman was a much-needed success for Warner Bros.

The success is almost definitely due in decent part to Jason Momoa’s hilarious and shirtless performance as the main character, plus the amazing visual effects that brought the world of Atlantis to life. So, it comes as no surprise that a sequel has been given the green light.

To ensure continuity, Warner Bros. has enlisted David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick to pen the new movie, per The Wrap. Johnson-McGoldrick worked alongside Will Beall to write the first film. He also worked with Aquaman director James Wan on the Conjuring movies. There’s no word on whether Wan will return to direct, although he is producing.

It appears that the underwater world of Aquaman will become a permanent staple of Warner Bros.’ revamped, hopefully more successful DC Universe. The studio is also making an Aquaman spinoff called The Trench, a horror-esque film that explores the deepest and darkest corners of the ocean.

There’s no synopsis for the Aquaman sequel as of yet, but at the premiere for the first movie, Johnson-McGoldrick said that the villain Black Manta would likely take on a bigger role in any future installments. Manta is probably the villain Aquaman is most closely associated with in the comics, so we’re completely down with that.
