Just the other day, James Cameron explained how his forthcoming sequel to Avatar — possibly titled The Way of Water — will bring us all the highly realistic underwater physics we wanted but didn’t get from Aquaman. Now he’s back at it, speaking on the Empire about podcast about how we can also expect lengthy marital arguments, the cornerstone of any good special effects-heavy sci-fi action movie:

"There’s a three-page argument scene between Jake and Neytiri, a marital dispute, very, very critical to the storyline. I wound up shooting it all from the point of view of the 8-year-old hiding under the structure and peeking in."

That argument will look spectacular in 3D, I’m sure.

Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) are the two lead characters from Avatar: she’s a native of the planet of Pandora, he’s a soldier who had his consciousness transferred into the body of a native Pandoran at the end of the first film. I guess that dynamic would be hard on any couple.

“Having gone through the experience with [Sam Worthington] on Avatar, I now knew how to write the Jake character going forward across the emotional roller coaster of the next four movies,” Cameron continued, reminding us that we’re in for the long haul here. “It’s been tough on him. He’s done two pictures back-to-back now, because we did 2 and 3 together. He had to go to some dark places.”

After the first Avatar came out in 2009, it looked like Worthington was destined for stardom, but although he’s worked steadily, he’s not exactly a household name. Meanwhile, Cameron revealed that he was in contention for the role with a couple of other guys who have gone on to great success: Chris Evans and Channing Tatum:

"I really liked Channing’s appeal. I liked Chris’ appeal. They were both great guys. But Sam had a quality of voice and a quality of intensity. Everybody did about the same on all the material through the script, except for the final speech where he stands up and says, ‘This is our land, ride now, go as fast as the wind can carry you.’ That whole thing. I would have followed him into battle. And I wouldn’t have followed the other guys. They’ve since gone on to fantastic careers and all that, but Sam was ready. He was ready."

Four straight Avatar sequels should give Worthington’s career all the shot in the arm it needs, assuming he wants it.
