Syfy cancels George R.R. Martin adaptation Nightflyers after one season
By Corey Smith
Game of Thrones may be the most popular show on the planet, but not everything with George R.R. Martin’s name attached to it is destined for success. Case in point: Syfy recently adapted Martin’s 1980 novella Nightflyers into a bloody science fiction-horror mashup. We liked the show okay, but apparently we were in the minority, because Deadline reports that Syfy has cancelled it after one season.
Coproduced by Syfy and Netflix (which handled overseas distribution), the ten-episode first season of Nightflyers debuted this past December. SyFy went all out for the series launch, making it available to watch on multiple platforms, limiting commercials and arranging for weekend marathons. Unfortunately, ratings remained modest, so even though the season 1 finale left the door open for more story, it is not to be.
