Lion King.” Just say those two words and let the childhood memories come rushing back to you. Recall the moment you fell in love with this Disney classic back in the olden days of 1994…if you were alive then…and how it became a part of your life. That feeling resurfaces every time I see anything pertaining to the live-action remake set to release later this year.

Last night, during the Oscars, Disney released some new (sort of) footage for the movie, and it was wonderful. The new trailer pretty much has stuff we’ve already seen, with a couple of extended bits. (That Pride Rock scene, though!)

But there was more: Disney also released a poster that should warm the heart of any ’90s kid:

One of the things I’m loving about this remake is just how real everything looks. Ever since Disney started adapting its animated classics as live-action films, people have been wondering how it could be done with something like The Lion King. Unless the studio planned on herding actual lions, it was going to have to use animation of some kind, just computer rather than hand-drawn. And computer animation can look fake. Still, Jon Favreau pulled something similar off with the 2016 Jungle Book remake, and it looks like he’s going to do it again. I can barely tell these are computer generated creatures.

Still, for all that, the best part about this version of The Lion King may be the epic, epic cast:

  • Donald Glover: Adult Simba
  • Beyoncé: Adult Nala
  • James Earl Jones: Mufasa
  • Chiwetel Ejiofor: Scar
  • Alfre Woodard: Sarabi
  • John Oliver: Zazu
  • John Kani: Rafiki
  • Billy Eichner: Timon
  • Seth Rogen: Pumbaa

And that’s still an incomplete list. Amazing, isn’t it? I can’t wait to see how this all comes together when the movie hits theaters on July 19.
