David Harbour (Sheriff Hopper) originally thought Stranger Things was going to be a “disaster”
Fans of shows like Stranger Things and Game of Thrones know what it’s like to wait an interminable amount of time between new seasons. For Thrones fans, the wait is almost over — season 8 drops April 14 — but Stranger Things fans still have to wait until July 4 to return to the charming/terrifying town of Hawkins, Indiana.

Stranger Things was a hit pretty much right out of the gate, and has gone on to become a great favorite, but in the beginning, star David Harbour (Sheriff Jim Hopper) didn’t even think it was going to get off the ground. “Going in, I had the same neurosis I have with everything,” Harbour told Empire Magazine. “Even though I liked it, I thought Stranger Things was going to be a disaster and nobody was going to watch it.”
So what changed his mind? While he was doing Shakespeare in the Park, 50 people were waiting backstage to talk to him about Stranger Things. “It became this phenomenon very quickly, and I was so gratified by that because it was so grassroots,” he said. “I knew then that things would be different for me. That I wouldn’t have to struggle so much. It was a milestone.”
And things did change for Harbour. The show’s success meant that he was suddenly living his life under a microscope. “I didn’t ever expect it to come for me in that way,” he said. “It’s great that people are affected by my work, but on the other hand I’d just like to be in a coffee shop and get into a fight with my girlfriend and not have people blog about it.”
FYI, Harbour’s girlfriend is Alison Sudol (Queenie Goldstein in Fantastic Beasts), and as far as we know they haven’t been fighting in any coffee shops, but there’s always time. And while success may bring challenges, it also brings opportunity. To wit, you can catch Harbour as the lead character in Hellboy later this year:
