Doctor Who: New cover art revealed for The Tenth Doctor Adventures: Volume Three
By James Aggas
With the latest volume out in just a couple of months, Big Finish have revealed brand new artwork for Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures!
I’m always a fan of the artwork for Big Finish’s Doctor Who stories. Considering the stories themselves are entirely on audio, the covers help to provide just a little bit of visual stimulus to help with the imagination.
So it’s always exciting when a new cover is revealed. Even more so when three of them are revealed at once! All of which are for The Tenth Doctor Adventures, naturally starring David Tennant. Like volume one of the series, these adventures are set during Series Four, with Donna traveling with the Doctor on board the TARDIS.
And, as the cover for the first episode shows, she’s not the only member of the Noble family to show up this series…

No Place
"It’s Haunted Makeovers! The home improvement show with a spooky twist. The Noble family are hoping to cast out a few spirits along with the old bathroom suite, as presenter Justin joins Donna, Wilf, Sylvia and the Doctor for the latest edition of his reality TV series.Of course, Justin knows that any supernatural phenomena can be faked. Ghosts can’t possibly be real. Can they…?"
No Place is already looking incredibly exciting. Along with presenting an interesting take on reality TV shows (almost like volume two’s Infamy of the Zaross, in fact), this episode features two very important people to Donna Noble: her mother, Sylvia, and her grandfather Wilf.
The latter character is especially exciting. We haven’t seen Bernard Cribbins play Wilf for a long time. In fact, the last time he played the character was in Tennant’s final episode The End of Time: Part 2, all the way back in 2010. And while this episode will be set a long while before then, and therefore not be a reunion as such, it’s still exciting to know he’s coming back in some form.
Jacqueline King has become something of a key actress for Big Finish in recent years. Not only has she come back a couple of times already to play her old role of Sylvia, both in The Tenth Doctor Chronicles and the spin-off series Lady Christina. She’s also played various other roles in other series, including The War Master and The Diary of River Song.
It’ll be great to hear the Noble family together again. Especially in a story by James Goss, who’s sure to bring out the best (and the worst!) in the Noble family with No Place!
The Tenth Doctor encounters the Judoon once more in One Mile Down.

One Mile Down
"Donna and the Doctor take a holiday – in the beautiful underwater city of Vallarasee.Things have changed since the Doctor last swam through it: Vallarasee is now enclosed inside an airdome. Judoon patrol historic sites, and instead of tourists wearing helmets to breathe, the native Fins are forced to adapt. But leaks have begun to trickle into the dome, and the Doctor and Donna must convince the Judoon that disaster is imminent. Or else thousands will be trapped, as the waters rise…"
We’ve got another New Series return with One Mile Down, although it’s less of a family member this time and more of a familiar monster. The rhino-like Judoon play a key role in this story, keeping an eye on the citizens of Vallarasee.
With the description of the episode involving a dome underwater that’s threatening to break, One Mile Down sounds like more of a straightforward disaster episode than a “monster of the week” story. It’ll be interesting to see how well the Judoon are used in this episode, and if being put in an extreme situation will bring different sides to them.
The Doctor and Donna face something alien in the London smog of 1952 in The Creeping Death.

The Creeping Death
"London, 1952, and a deadly smog envelops the capital. But something even more dangerous – and alien – is hiding within the mists. When the Doctor and Donna get lost in the fog, they find a motley group of Londoners trying to make their way home.Soon the stakes are raised, as death creeps along fume-choked streets, and not everyone will make it out alive…"

We get a bit of a historical with The Creeping Death. A historical with quite the interesting setting: London in 1952, the year of the Great Smog of London. I remember reading about this back in high school and being shocked about it. Thousands died directly because of the smog, and it was the worst air-pollution event in UK history.
While this will unsurprisingly feature monsters lurking within the fog, I am hoping that we get some exploration of the setting, at least. I’m especially curious about what Donna will make of it. Will she be shocked? Perhaps even scared? Will her granddad have told her anything about it? Regardless, the period will certainly be interesting to explore.
Overall, not only do each of these stories sound good, but they look good, too. I like each of the covers for different reasons. No Place instantly grabs the eye with the Noble family; One Mile Down has a nice simplicity to it, but I think The Creeping Death is my favorite. The London setting is clear, we get a glimpse of the monsters in the story, and there are even hints of the smog within the cover design. I look forward to finding out if the story itself is as interesting as the cover.
