Ricky Whittle plays lead character Shadow Moon on Starz’s adaptation of author Neil Gaiman’s novel American Gods. The show’s first season was a bit of a slow-rolling mess that ended with a cliffhanger of sorts, but critics and viewers alike seemed to like it, so here we are at the edge of season 2.

While all that’s going on, we’re bidding farewell to Game of Thrones, even though we’re not remotely ready. Could American Gods be the show to fill the Westeros-sized hole in our hearts after Thrones is off the air? Speaking to Digital Spy, Whittle gave his take:

"I don’t think it’s going to replace anything. I feel it’s something completely fresh. When people say it’s the next Game of Thrones, I think they mean that it’s a big expensive show, it’s a monster of a show."

Game of Thrones took a couple of seasons for people to really catch on to how good it really was. Does American Gods have the same potential? I’m not entirely convinced, but I could be biased. The show has the visual effects factor working in its favor, along with great actors like Ian McShane in key roles. But I’m not ready to say its better than or even on a level with Game of Thrones.

But Ricky Whittle begs to differ…

"It’s also dark, beautiful and deliberately-paced…I think it’s even more beautiful, I really do. Ian McShane said it right, Game of Thrones is ‘tits and dragons’."

It’s true: McShane did say that, back around the time he appeared on the show as Septon Ray, and no one will stop bringing it up.

Anyway, we’ll see if American Gods lives up to Whittle’s praise when season 2 kicks off this Sunday. The reviews have been mixed, and I still don’t see this series going toe-to-toe with HBO’s finest, but we’re still curious to see how it goes.
