Doctor Who: The First and Second Doctors will meet each other in Daughter of the Gods!

Later this year, two Doctors will meet and have opposing views on the fate of a companion in Doctor Who: Daughter of the Gods!

Following the news that the Second Doctor will meet the Master, details for the other story in this year’s season of Doctor Who: The Early Adventures have been revealed. And it’s pretty major. Not only will the story focus on the First Doctor’s companion, Katarina, who died during the events of The Daleks’ Master Plan. But the First Doctor will come face to face with his immediate successor, the Second Doctor!

Here’s the official description of the story from Big Finish:

"When Zoe reattaches an old piece of equipment to the TARDIS console, she, Jamie and the Doctor are very lucky to avoid a collision. But the place they find themselves in may be even more dangerous – because there they encounter another Doctor, a space pilot called Steven… and a young woman called Katarina who really shouldn’t be there…."

There are several reasons why this is so exciting. Firstly, a multi-Doctor story is brilliant when it’s handled well, and it sounds like that’s exactly what we’re getting with this story. Both Peter Purves and Frazer Hines, who play companions Steven Taylor and Jamie McCrimmon, respectively, do great impressions of their Doctors.

It also sounds like we’re going to get a rather different kind of multi-Doctor story. Particularly since it concerns the fate of one of the Doctor’s companions…

Katarina – back from the dead?

Big Finish bringing back Katarina is a pretty big move. A key reason why they haven’t done this sooner is that the companion wasn’t around for very long at all. After initially being introduced in The Myth Makers and believing the Doctor to be a god, she lasts only a few episodes into the very next story, The Daleks’ Master Plan, before she’s killed off. So there’s very little wiggle room for new stories there.

However, this isn’t the first time that Big Finish have expanded a particular story to explore a companion who didn’t last long. In fact, this isn’t the first time they’ve explored a gap in The Daleks’ Master Plan, specifically! But that’s always been focused on exploring Sara Kingdom, another companion who was later killed off in the same story.

For this release, Katarina has been recast with Ajjaz Awad now playing the role. It’ll be interesting to hear how she plays it, and how well she fits in with the First Doctor and Steven.

Opposing Doctors

More from Winter is Coming

But even more interesting is how the companion will become the focus for the two Doctors. David K Barnes, who also wrote the excellent Early Adventure The Dalek Occupation of Winter, describes a key element of Daughter of the Gods:

"I always knew what the core of my story should be. What could possibly bring the two Doctors into conflict, on the opposite sides of a dilemma? It could only be the fate of Katarina…"

I love the idea of a multi-Doctor story where the incarnations have distinctly different views. This has been explored to an extent with the Fifth and Seventh Doctors in Cold Fusion. But the Doctors disagreeing over the fate of a companion should be interesting. I really can’t wait to listen to this one!

Daughter of the Gods will be available on CD and download in November.
