Sheriff Hopper and Al Swearengen banter in clip from Hellboy

In Hollywood, you’re no one unless you’re in a superhero movie, meaning that these two actors are officially someones. David Harbour, best known as Sheriff Hopper in Stranger Things, plays Hellboy, an affable demon who defends Earth from eldritch evils, Nazi sorcerers, and the like. Ian McShane, probably best known as Al Swearengen from HBO’s Deadwood (and Mr. Wednesday from American Gods, and Brother Ray from Game of Thrones, and how much time do you have because we could do this for a while), plays Hellboy’s mentor/boss/father figure, Trevor Bruttenholm.

The movie is Hellboy, and ComingSoon.net got its hands on the first official clip:

It wasn’t that long ago that Guillermo del Toro was making Hellboy movies with Ron Perlman as the lead character and John Hurt as a kinder, gentler Bruttenholm. Those movies are well-liked but I suppose they didn’t make enough money to turn into a world-stomping series. I get why Lionsgate is reviving the franchise now, during our current superhero boom.

I haven’t read Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comics, but liked the original two movies well enough. They were quirky, and Hellboy is a likable lead, a superhero who acts like a goofy teenager but looks like the destroyer of worlds. At this point, I’m always wondering if the next superhero movie will finally be the one to burst the bubble, but this one looks good enough to stand on its own.
