Behind the scenes of Netflix’s Witcher show: Henry Cavill in costume in action as Geralt

As we speak, Netflix is hard at work on adapting author Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher books as a TV series, with Henry “I used to be Superman” Cavill in the lead role of Geralt of Rivia, a superhuman monster hunter who must navigate a medieval-style fantasy world “where people often prove more wicked than beasts,” according to Netflix’s synopsis. The series already has a built-in fanbase thanks to CD Projekt Red’s very successful Witcher video games, so if Netflix gets this right, it could be big.

So far, the signs are encouraging. Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich seems well and truly invested in the project, and fans seemed to react positively to the behind-the-scenes glimpse we got of actor Anya Chalotra in costume as Yennfer, Geralt’s on-again, off-again sorceress love interest.

Now, we’ve got another update. Spanish-language outlet Diario de Avisos snagged a photo of Cavill in costume of Geralt, filming at the highest point on the island La Palma in the Canary Islands, off the northwestern coast of Africa. It’s kind of far away, and you can’t really tell what Geralt is doing, and is this paparazzi in a tree or something, but it’s definitely Geralt:

He seems to be wearing the same body armor he wears in the books, looking pretty snug on Cavill (or possibly Cavill’s double; it’s hard to be certain). You’ll also notice some stubble. In the first look Netflix gave us of the character, Cavill was clean-shaven, but that was before shooting began.

And we’re off! Netflix is set to drop The Witcher later this year.
