Once Game of Thrones ends forever on May 19, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss will move on to a galaxy far, far away and begin making a new Star Wars trilogy for Disney. So far, there’s been next to nothing in the way of news about the dynamic duo’s new gig, but a rumor from fan site Star Wars News Net is gaining traction.

According to a source for the site, Benioff and Weiss’ trilogy will be set in the Old Republic era of Star Wars. If you’re unfamiliar, the Old Republic refers to a time roughly 3,600 years before the prequel trilogy (Episodes I-III). During this era, thousands of Sith and Jedi warred across the galaxy, making it a fan-favorite timeline in Star Wars canon.

The Old Republic has inspired some very popular video games — including RPG Knights of the Old Republic and the massively multiplayer online game Star Wars: The Old Republic — and several best-selling books. Fan-favorite characters like the Jedi Knight Revan, Bastila Shan, Darth Malgus and Darth Bane all come from this era.

The source at Star Wars News Net claims Benioff and Weiss will begin filming their first Star Wars film this fall. According to them, “Disney wants to open up the Star Wars timeline and appeal to a more ‘Game of Thrones‘ style audience.”

The Old Republic era is considered the medieval period for the Star Wars galaxy, with royal bloodlines from several different planets getting involved in the war between the Sith and the Jedi. If this rumor pans out, it sounds like Benioff and Weiss will be right at home.
