HBO unveils teaser and release date for Deadwood movie

For three seasons back in the 2000s, HBO’s Deadwood cut an incisive, dramatically rich, deeply profane swath across the world of cable TV. The show burned brightly but briefly.

But now, over a decade after the final episode aired, Deadwood is returning to HBO as a movie, written by creator David Milch. The year is 1889. “ndelible characters of the series are reunited after ten years to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood,” reads the official synopsis. “Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds are reopened, as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.”

Sounds juicy. Now, we can judge for ourselves with a new teaser:

Ian McShane (Al Swearengen) doesn’t look like he’s aged a day. And he’s far from the only cast member returning. Pretty much everyone alive at the end of the original show is back. Here’s the full roster:

  • Paula Malcomson as Trixie
  • John Hawkes as Sol Star
  • Molly Parker as Alma Ellsworth
  • Anna Gunn as Martha Bullock
  • Dayton Callie as Charlie Utter
  • Brad Dourif as Doc Cochran
  • Robin Weigert as Calamity Jane
  • W. Earl Brown as Dan Dority
  • William Sanderson as E. B. Farnum
  • Kim Dickens as Joanie Stubbs
  • Gerald McRaney as George Hearst
  • Jade Pettyjohn as Caroline
  • Keone Young as Mr. Wu
  • Franklyn Ajaye as Samuel Fields
  • Lily Keene as Sofia Ellsworth

It looks like this movie will reckon with the death of the Old West, as annoying things like statehood and civilization ruin everybody’s good time. We also get a release date: May 31. Mark it down.
