Game of Thrones will end forever on May 19. However, as Entertainment Weekly reports, that won’t quite be the end, as a week later HBO will air a two-hour documentary about the filming of the eighth and final season.

Game of Thrones: The Last Watch will air on May 26. It was directed by British filmmaker Jeanie Finlay (Seahorse, Orion: The Man Who Would Be King), and “delves deep into the mud and blood to reveal the tears and triumphs involved in the challenge of bringing the fantasy world of Westeros to life in the very real studios, fields and car-parks of Northern Ireland.”

"Much more than a ‘making of’ documentary, this is a funny, heartbreaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world – and then have to say goodbye to it."

To be clear, this is not the reunion special filmed on set and hosted by latenight host Conan O’Brien; so far as we know, that’s going to appear on a forthcoming Game of Thrones Blu-ray boxset. So there will be multiple ways to say goodbye to the show after it’s over.

The Last Watch sounds like one of those Making Game of Thrones mini-documentaries that HBO has been making, except much longer and more complex, which is something I think we all could enjoy.

Game of Thrones season 8 premieres on April 14. Prepare accordingly.
