Vikings star joins cast of Netflix’s The Witcher as Boholt

We’ve been getting quite a lot of news lately about Netflix’s The Witcher, an adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s series of fantasy novels probably best known for CD Projekt Red’s video game adaptations. We know that Henry “Superman” Cavill will play the lead role of Geralt of Rivia, a superhuman monster hunter who must navigate a medieval fantasy world “where people often prove more wicked than beasts,” and that actor Anya Chalotra will play his on-again, off-again sorceress love interest Yennefer. Now we’re getting more casting announcements the old fashioned way: actors posting about them on their Instagram accounts:

That’s Vikings star Steve Wall as Boholt, who shows up in Sapkowski’s short story “The Bounds of Reason,” which is collected along with several other Witcher-related tales in Sword of Destiny. Long story short, “Reason” is about a group of people who are hunting for the dragon Myrgtabrakke, all for their own reasons. Boholt is a mercenary leader hired by King Niedamir to seek the beast out.

Obviously, this also tells us what kind of stories Netflix’s show will adapt. The Witcher series is unique in that the first two books — The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny — are both made up of interrelated short stories, while the rest tell one long serialized tale. Perhaps the first season, which is eight episodes long, will gobble up these appetizers before season 2 moves on to the main course?
