Netflix renews The Dragon Prince for season 3, shows off a poster
By Dan Selcke
Netflix’s The Dragon Prince is the spiritual successor to Avatar: The Last Airbender, a beloved high fantasy Nickelodeon show that got a reviled big screen adaptation from M. Night Shyamalan in 2010. It’s made by Aaron Ehasz, the head writer on Airbender, and it has a lot of that show’s style, from the detailed fantasy world to the mix of family friendly humor with weighty themes about war and death and all that stuff. So far, it’s kind of alike a PG-rated Game of Thrones, and that’s okay.

And the story isn’t over. At the official Dragon Prince panel at the recent WonderCon in Anaheim, California, it was announced that the show would be returning for a third season, although there’s no release date as of yet. There is a poster, though:
That would be Zym, the titular dragon prince, coming face to face with one of his more fully grown relatives. When last we left the show, the human princeling Callum and the elven assassin Rayla were smuggling Zym back into the magical land of Xadia, hoping that returning the young dragon to his family will prevent an impending war between humans and elves, who live on opposite sides of a large continent. Meanwhile, Callum’s younger brother Ezran, another prince, is returning to the human kingdom of Katolis to take up the throne, although they may put him in contact with Lord Viren, who’s been running things in his absence and trying to foment war with the elves.
See what I mean when I say it’s kind of like Game of Thrones? it’s got all the dragon action and political maneuvering, but you shouldn’t expect anyone to get naked or die at a wedding, thank goodness.
Anyway, the third season will have nine episodes, just like before. I’ve been enjoying the series despite some initial resistance, so I say bring it on.
