I dreamed I watched the Battle of Winterfell—Here’s what happened
By Corey Smith
Previously in our adventures into into my subconscious, I dreamed in stunning detail the premiere episode of Game of Thrones season 8. Apparently that was not enough for my overactive mind, as last night I dreamed what looks to be the final season’s showcase sequence: the Battle of Winterfell. Given that the majority of season 8’s marketing has focused on this event, it’s perhaps only natural that it showed in my dreams.
So how did things go for our favorite heroes…in my head? Well, when the episode actually airs and everyone else is saying “in my wildest dreams I never thought it’d go this bad,” I won’t be able to say the same. Let’s jump in!
In my dream, the Battle of Winterfell starts rather suddenly. Arya, Jon, Sansa, Daenerys and many others are in a modern-looking house talking about how best to fight the Night King, when the demon himself appears. I’m not sure if he suddenly gained an ability to teleport like fellow big bad Thanos, but one second there’s conversation, and then all hell breaks loose. Arya is the first to respond, leaping to attack the Night King with her Valyrian steel dagger.
Arya is whirling and flipping like a ninja, but the Night King bobs and weaves away from every attack, clearly just playing with Arya before stabbing her through the abdomen with an ice spear. Jon makes to attack the Night King as well, but Dany restrains him and convinces Jon they need to get outside where they are “prepared.” Jorah drags a grieving Sansa out of the house, and everyone else follows into the Winterfell courtyard. And things just get worse from there.
Perhaps they’re off flying through the canyons of the North, because the dragons are nowhere to be seen here. Jorah fights off the horde of wights pouring out of the house our heroes just left as the rest of the group makes its way to a ruined part of the castle to hide behind crumbled walls that offer little shelter. Sansa is hysterical, and shouts over and over for Jorah to “burn them.”
Now separated from the group and surrounded by wights, Jorah drops his sword and looks at Daenerys, torch in hand. Dany is shouting for him not to do it, but Jorah only smiles and lights some sort of fuse on the ground. I clearly remember the fuse being very long, running across the courtyard to the ruins where Jon, Dany and the rest are seeking shelter. When Jorah lights the fuse, the house instantly ignites, obliterating a horde of wights and Jorah himself.
Sansa and Daenerys are now both grief stricken and barely able to stand, but the next moment stuns them all into action. Our heroes are suddenly surrounded by a group of White Walkers a hundred strong, spaced every few feet throughout the ruins. They stare at Jon and company, unmoving. Quickly realizing the danger they are in, the group flees underground, using an entrance to the crypts, where things only get worse.
Waiting for them in the crypts is the Night King. Sansa, I guess driven mad by grief, rushes head on to fight him, with Jon close on her heels. The Night King quickly knocks Jon aside and touches Sansa on the arm. In a slow motion montage, we watch as her body freezes, with flashes back to key moments in her journey. When her body has completely frozen, the Night King raises it above his head and shatters Sansa into a thousand pieces. Thanks for that image, brain.
Left with just Jon and Dany, the Night King moves on the former, who’s now regained his senses. Sansa’s death fuels a rage like I’ve never seen in Jon, and the two battle while Dany watches, glued to a wall, afraid of suffering the same fate as Sansa. The Night King lands multiple quick cuts on Jon, but he’s not having as easy a time as he did with Arya. Jon is slowly gaining ground, even if he’s taking damage to do it. Like at Hardhome, Jon manages to finally land a killing blow, stabbing the Night King through the chest, and he instantly explodes into ice cubes. And then things really go downhill…
Using the same entrance our heroes used, the group of White Walkers from above now begin slowly marching down into the crypts, completely unfazed by the Night King’s death. Jon is wounded and weak, barely able to keep up with Dany as the pair flee down a passage. Eventually Jon collapses, but Dany doesn’t stop to help, and continues downward. The passage eventually ends by opening on some sort of cliffside. Drogon is waiting there. Dany hopes on his back, flying off into the sky and safety.
My dream closes with Jon finally making it out of the passage, where he falls to his knees. Dany and Jon stare at one another as she flies off. The camera pans up, as the White Walkers emerge slowly behind Jon, and we lose sight of the King in the North as he’s surrounded by enemies. The last shot we have is of Dany flying off with Rhaegal right behind her.

Wow, what a bummer that dream was. The Battle of Winterfell will certainly have a high body count, but I would never expect this many of our favorite characters to perish. And while we didn’t see many of the other characters — Brienne, Jaime, — I got the sense they were all already dead, somehow murdered by the Night King during his surprise assault. Perhaps the only comfort I got was the dream immediately following this one was about putting on a sales seminar at my day job.
Either way, stay tuned. Maybe I’m dream the series finale next!
