Doctor Who: Half price sale on three Big Finish releases!
By James Aggas
Until the end of the week, you can get three great Doctor Who double bills on audio from Big Finish at half price!
If you’ve been curious about Big Finish for a while, but don’t know where to start, you’re in luck. Until Friday at 23:59 (UK time), Big Finish are having a sale on three of their Doctor Who audios, at fifty percent off each. To get the stories at discounted price, just go to https://www.bigfinish.com/offers/v/april2019 and enter in the code WEBSITE50.
Not only do these releases feature stories of the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Doctors. But each of them is a double-bill, giving you even more of an idea of what Big Finish is capable of.
Three releases, six great stories
And each of these releases tell very strong stories. The Fifth Doctor and Nyssa are the main stars of Alien Heart / Dalek Soul. Both of these stories are very enjoyable, for very different reasons.
Alien Heart is a straightforward but enjoyable Doctor Who story by Stephen Cole, while Dalek Soul is much darker and far more shocking. It’s full of twists and turns, and Guy Adams has given us one of the darkest Fifth Doctor stories…or does he?
Vortex Ice / Cortex Fire gives us two stories of the Sixth Doctor and Flip. The first features both alien horror and timey-wimeyness deep underground in North Mexico, while the second features strange goings-on on a distant world.
Both stories are strong ones, although Vortex Ice is admittedly my preference. Not only is the timey-wimeyness handled well, but writer Jonathan Morris throws in one or two clever twists that makes the story even more rewarding on re-listen.
Shadow Planet / World Apart features the Seventh Doctor, Ace and Hex. Once again, we get two really great stories with this one. Shadow Planet explores the fears and insecurities of our regulars in an interesting way, and AK Benedict gives us a fascinating look what human beings both love and hate about themselves.
However, World Apart is an even stronger offering. Initially, it’s simply a three-hander with the regulars, but when the Doctor and the TARDIS disappears, it’s essentially a two-hander for the two companions.
Scott Handcock explores just how close Ace and Hex have become at this point, while also throwing them into a situation of pure jeopardy. To top it all off, you have a scene with the Seventh Doctor at his absolute alien worst/best.
Strong introductions
All three releases I’d easily recommend, especially to newcomers of Big Finish. Not only do they feature great Doctor Who stories, but they also make a decent introduction to some of Big Finish’s original companions.
More from Winter is Coming
- For All Mankind finally gives us information in Episode 405, “Goldilocks”
- Watch a stunning VFX breakdown of The Wheel of Time season 2
- Of course Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) thinks Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen) should rule Westeros
- Confirmed: The Last of Us season 2 will air in 2025
- Final season of Star Trek: Discovery will have “a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of fun”
Flip is a brilliant companion for the Sixth Doctor. She’s someone who clashes with him in terms of style in some ways, but the two share great chemistry, and they round each other out really well.
Hex’s story is…complicated, but you don’t need to know any of that to enjoy his stories with Seven. He’s a very likable character, and clearly more loyal to Ace than to the Doctor himself (although he’s definitely a strong ally for him. Most of the time, anyway). It’s always a joy to hear him show up in a story.
So if you’re someone who’s just getting started with Big Finish, or if you’re just wanting to fill some of the gaps in your collection, then this is definitely a sale that’s worth checking out. But remember: this lasts only until 23:59 on Friday night, UK time!
