Behind-the-scenes Witcher footage gives fans first look at Vilgefortz
By Dan Selcke
Netflix is currently hard at work shooting an adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels. At the moment, word is they’re in Poland, filming at the very photogenic Zamek Ogrodzieniec castle ruins:
And just what are they filming? YouTube’s own Thunder Trailer was in the area and got some very good (and very well edited) footage:
Okay, so what are we looking at? It appears to be a scene featuring a lot of mages gathered together, including Australian actor Mahesh Jadu as Vilgefortz, an important character from the books. You can see him saunter onto camera around 1:31, and the shot follows him for a while after.

Assuming the fans on Reddit have the right of this, it’s the first time we’re getting a look at Vilgefortz. Here’s how he’s described in the novels:
"“Observe the man escorting her. He’s Vilgefortz of Roggeveen and he really is young. But incredibly talented.”In the case of sorcerers, as Geralt knew, the term ‘young’ covered any age up to and including a hundred years. Vilgefortz looked thirty-five. He was tall and well-built, wore a short jerkin of a knightly cut – but without a coat of arms, naturally. He was also fiendishly handsome. It made a great impression…"
Without saying too much, Vilegfortz is a major antagonist in the books, so it’s important to get his casting right.
Jadu may be best known for his role as Ahmad in the Netflix’s historical drama Marco Polo. Let’s hope The Witcher fares better than that.
We’ve gotten other glimpses behind the scenes of the show, including footage of actor Anya Chalotra in costume as Yennefer, and of course Netflix up and showed us what Henry Cavill will look like as lead character Geralt of Rivia, no leak necessary.
