It’s a big few days for Disney. The Star Wars Celebration is happening in Chicago right now, and the other day, the company announced a whole mess of new information about its upcoming streaming service Disney+ at its Investor Day. The company is positioning Disney+ as a major new player that could go toe to toe with and maybe even topple Netflix. What do you need to know about it?
First, the basics: Disney+ will launch on November 12, 2019 in the U.S. You can pay for it monthly at a rate of $6.99, or get it for the whole year for $69.99, for a savings of $10 and change. Not a bad price for a streaming service; for comparison’s sake, the basic Netflix package costs $8.99 per month; way to undercut, Disney.

Of course, price doesn’t mean much if you don’t plan to get Disney+ all, but the company is working overtime to make sure you can’t live without it. Here’s some of the new information about programming:
- The premiere episode of The Mandalorian, the first ever live-action Star Wars series, will be available to watch on day one. It stars Game of Thrones alum Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell) as a lone gunfighter on the edge of the galaxy, and is set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
- Another Star Wars live-action show about Cassian Andor, Diego Luna’s character from Rogue One,will follow. There’s still no title for this one, but we now know that Alan Tudyk will reprise his fan favorite role as the sarcastic security droid K-2SO.
- The original three Star Wars films will be available on day one. So will the prequels, The Force Awakens and Rogue One. Episode VIII: The Last Jedi and Solo will follow later. The entire Star Wars franchise will be available to watch within the first year.
- And it’s not all about Star Wars. Disney+ will be the home for a live-action Lady and the Tramp remake, a High School Musical TV series, and a show based on the 1993 movie The Sandlot. Perhaps most notably, Disney+ will be the exclusive online streaming home for The Simpsons. That outta be worth a few subscriptions.
- Disney is making a number of shows based on Marvel characters, including one revolving around the Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), and Vision (Paul Bettany). The title of the show? WandaVision…wait, that’s really what they’re calling it? Okay.
I say we all just throw our hands up and admit we’re going to get this. You win, Disney. See you November 12.
