Warning: We’re discussing Game of Thrones‘ season 8 premiere in detail. Beware!

This is it: your last chance to walk away.

Alright, let’s get into it.

Game of Thrones fans, Jon Snow is officially a dragon rider. Before you lose your mind as to how cool that all is, let’s think about the ongoing ramifications of this. This is, after all, the first time he’s ever been on dragonback.

Some might say that he’ll be a natural, like Daenerys Targaryen, and the footage in this week’s episode is certainly promising. With only five episodes left after this one, there really isn’t time for there to be a training montage.

But Daenerys also isn’t that good of an example, all things considered, because she’s already lost one dragon and her connection to her dragons is also innate. She hatched them. She has raised them and seen them grown. They are, for better or worse, her children. Jon doesn’t have the same connection, not just yet.

Bran says early in the episode that “there’s no time,” and that applies to Jon, too. He doesn’t have the time he needs to become a proper, fantastic dragon rider. He knows much of combat, but this is not the same as riding a horse. (That being said, he does say that “you’ve completely ruined horses for me.”) We’re not saying he’s going to get poor Rhaegal killed, but our hopes are not high considering that the battles yet to come are going to be fierce.

Say your prayers for Rhaegal — and for Drogon, too, we suppose.

The Night King has good aim.

Even if that doesn’t do them in, it’s clear that the dragons aren’t handling the cold too well. “They don’t like the North,” Daenerys says, and their eating is dwindling down. They need to be strong.
