Joe Dempsie (Gendry) and Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm) spoke at the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival over the weekend in London and had a lot to say about the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones. We are officially one episode in, and there’s already a ton to unpack. Check it out:

During the panel, Dempsie promised that season 8 has “the perfect balance” between character development and action. He implied that this was a step up from season 7, which interviewer Jamie East described as a bit of an ‘Avengers assemble’ moment. “That’s totally what season seven was all about, wasn’t it?” Dempsie asked. “‘Character development?’ ‘Nah.’ ‘Story?’ I really need to shut up now!” Well, HBO can’t fire you anymore. Go ahead!

Dempsie may be talking about a much-maligned moment from season 7 where Gendry, having gone beyond the Wall with Jon Snow to hunt down a wight, has to run back to Eastwatch at a tremendous speed. Fans piled on the show for that, because it was pretty silly, and according to Dempsie, the shooting script anticipated them. “There’s a moment in ‘Beyond The Wall’ where the stage directions said, ‘After rowing for a ridiculous amount of time, Gendry runs for an unfeasible speed’,” Dempsie revealed. Oh, those cheeky writers.

Whatever his feelings about Gendry’s comeback season, Dempsie is all smiles about season 8:

"We all know what the characters are anticipating, what it is we’re all readying ourselves for. This reckoning that’s about to happen. We haven’t seen anything past episode one. But I’m sure there’s going to be the most stunning Game of Thrones sequences you’ve ever seen. I think it’s perfectly balanced between the show-stopping sequences that has made Game of Thrones redefine what television is capable of, and those rich characters. That’s what’s really hooked people in, and there’s plenty of that in season 8."

Anderson was pretty much in agreement with Dempsie, saying simply that the final season is “really f***king good!”

The two actors had good chemistry throughout the interview. What do they think of a potential Grey Worm-Gendry spinoff?

"I just want to work with Joe all the time. I want there to be a side-quel to this season where Gendry and Grey Worm find the time to solve mysteries together. Preferably in the South, in Essos, where it’s nice and warm. It’d be like Magnum PI."

“I can find ever-creative ways to skive off work in the forge,” Dempsie added. “Missandei thinks you’re cheating, but really, we’re sleuthing!” Well, now I need to see this show. I’ll go start a petition.
