Former Game of Thrones star and current Aquaman Jason Momoa has shaved his magnificent beard, and he recorded it for posterity. The actor committed this crime against facial hair to prepare for his role as Duncan Idaho in Legendary Pictures’ upcoming Dune movie. Watch the massacre:

“Goodbye, Drogo!” he says. “Goodbye, Arthur Curry!” Until Aquaman 2, anyway.

As you can see, Momoa and his pal are out in the desert; it looks like it could be in Jordan, where Denis Villeneuve is filming parts of Dune. And what’s with his pants? Did Jason Momoa just escape a chain gang?

Anyway, we’re being petty. Momoa is actually shaving his beard to promote the recycling of aluminum cans and to discourage the use of plastic bottles, which is a good cause.

Now, after looking at a shorn Momoa, I can really see him as Duncan Idaho. In Frank Herbert’s Dune novels, Idaho is described as handsome with curling black hair, a dark round face, and graceful movements. Momoa fits that description rather nicely.

Duncan is an expert pilot and a Swordmaster of a specialty called “Ginaz.” He excels in hand-to-hand combat. With his physicality, Momoa should be perfect for the role.

So now we have a shirtless Josh Brolin and a shaved Jason Momoa. Dune is making waves. The movie is due out in November of 2020.
