Game of Thrones is back, and that means artist Robert M. Ball is once again creating gorgeous artwork highlighting a particular death from each new episode. Welcome to the Beautiful Death series.

This week, Ball rendered to paint Ned Umber, who was really the only character to die this week. Check out the artwork:
“It’s a message from the Night King”
I love how Ball interpreted Ned Umber’s death, with the Night King looming over him like a puppet master. Ned’s right eye burns with fire because Beric killed him with his flaming sword, and his left eye is the blue color of an undead minion of the Night King. We also see the arms that were nailed in a spiral pattern around Ned; they’re aflame as well.
Ned is holding the Umber sword, with the chains of House Umber intertwined down the blade. The sword then turns into the waterfall that Jon and Daenerys flew to for their make-out session. Beric and Tormund frame the poster on each side.
You can see the white sunbursts of House Karstark in the background, which is an odd choice, but maybe Ball picked up on Tyrion noting the banners earlier in the episode.
I have no idea what death Ball will choose for Episode 802, but I’m already terrified for how many options he may have for Episode 803.
Man, we need titles.
