Possible Game of Thrones prequel sets emerge in Northern Ireland

Although there will be no more speculation or filming news about HBO’s Game of Thrones, fans still have Jane Goldman’s prequel series to look forward to, and from the looks of it, the new series is almost ready to get going. Set thousands of years before the current show, the prequel will be set during the Age of Heroes, a period during which darkness fell over Westeros and the living were forced to fight against the dead for the first time.

With pre-production in full swing, sets have begun cropping up throughout Northern Ireland, where much of the original series was filmed. Most notably, a set has been constructed at Titanic Studios in Belfast, which served as the nerve center of Game of Thrones and has been now been commandeered by the prequel.

Fansite Watchers on the Wall has a few photos of the set in progress:

So we’ve got pulleys and stone formations, plus who knows what else by the time the build is complete. Game of Thrones didn’t have these kinds of elaborate sets when it started, but the prequel is getting something of a leg-up resource wise. You can see even more set photos over at Watchers on the Wall.

Yet another possible set has been spotted in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. County Antrim is home to places like Magheramorne Quarry, where the show filmed bits of everything from the Battle of Blackwater to the Massacre at Hardhome to the as-yet-unseen Battle of Winterfell. It also contains Shane’s Castle, which stood in for the Winterfell crypts. This particular set is built near the Hidden Village of Galboly, which stood in for Runestone, the seat of House Royce in the Vale, on Game of Thrones. There’s no guarantee that the new set is for the prequel, but it would make sense.

It looks like we have the makings of a small quaint village, although one of the buildings is labeled “burnt out building,” so looks can be deceiving. Villages were pillaged often enough on the mainlain show, so why should things be any different thousands of years ago?
