This Sunday on Game of Thrones, there’s going to be a big battle at Winterfell and a bunch of characters are probably going to die. We can say that with some degree of confidence. However, after that, not many people know what’s going to happen. That’s a credit to HBO’s attempt to clamp down on spoilers this year, but there are still clues for those who know where to look. But be forewarned: this post contains potential SPOILERS.

For example, the behind-the-scenes videos HBO puts out after every episode have some intriguing details. Let’s start with the “Game Revealed” episode for “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” It’s an entertaining watch on its own, but I’d like to draw attention to…whatever it is Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) is wearing.
A still frame, for your convenience:
Is that a smock? Is she about to create some art? She’s clearly in costume — she doesn’t just walk around in a red Sansa wig — but we’ve never seen Sansa wear anything like that before. Maybe it’s something she wears under a more elaborate costume?
If it was just Turner, that’s probably the explanation I would settle on. But then came HBO’s “The Last Night” video…
…which also featured John Bradley (Samwell Tarly) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) wearing the exact same grey, loose-fitting costumes:
Like Sansa, these characters have never been spotted wearing such outfits, and we seriously doubt any will have time to change into matching smocks during the heated Battle of Winterfell. Also, these don’t look like the kind of garments you’d wear up north in the winter. The fabric looks way more breathable. Do these characters don these clothes once they head back south?
Let’s say they do. That still doesn’t answer the question of why Sansa, Sam and Arya are all wearing the same outfit. (And who knows if other characters are wearing the same thing?) To me, they all kind of look like they joined a cult and are about to undergo a group baptism, but that’s probably not it, unless Melisandre’s role in season 8 is very different from what we imagined.
It also looks like they’re in the same sunny location — the backgrounds behind Bradley and Williams look particularly similar — which could mean they’re all taking a break from shooting the same scene to film talking head interviews. If I had to guess, I’d say they’re in Seville, which is where the production filmed scenes at the Dragonpit of King’s Landing for the season 7 finale. At one point during the shooting of season 8, a critical mass of cast members gathered in the city to film a very secretive scene. Are we getting a sneak peak behind the series finale here?
You know, now that I look at it, the outfits do look a little like the what Sam wore at the Citadel in season 7:
But that doesn’t really help. They all become maesters? How does that make sense?
Also, I just found this old image of Bran wearing something very similar in the first season. I guess it’s some kind of Northern undershirt?
You know, whatever the hell Gendry is wearing is pretty weird too, with the slashed shoulders:
I know I’m not really providing any firm answers here, but that’s because I don’t have any. What do you all think? What are we looking at here?
And as long as we’re looking too closely at images, does anyone have any thoughts on what looks like a spooky face hanging out behind Sansa in this advance image from Episode 803?
The floor is yours.
