Let’s not beat around the bush: the way the latest episode of Game of Thrones went, it looks like we’re headed to an ending where Daenerys sacks the city of King’s Landing. Maybe she’ll pull back at the last second, maybe there will be a reprieve, but considering what show we’re watching, I know I’m nervous.
Going behind the scenes of the latest episode, the cast members give us an idea of where their characters’ heads are at, starting with Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke explaining why Jon and Dany can’t pick up the pieces of their relationship. The short answer: the incest thing is just too weird for at least one of them.
Clarke’s lines are ominous here: “Without having someone like Ser Jorah being the mediator for those thoughts…she’s left to her own thoughts, which are — as you’d expect them to be — pretty destructive and pretty dark.” Uh oh.
We get more of that in this video breaking down the scene outside the walls of King’s Landing, where Cersei has Missandei executed.
Geez, this scene was uncomfortable and tense. At least Lena Headey (Cersei) and Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei) were being sweet to each other behind the scenes. Emmanuel’s point about how horrible it is for Missandei to be put in chains again hurts. Remember: the last time she was in (metaphorical) chains, Dany liberated her by sacking Astapor. Oh god, I think I’m developing a stress ulcer…
Once again, Clarke emphasizes that without her support network, Dany is in danger of giving in to her darkest thoughts. And she’s not the only one feeling wrecked by these last couple of episodes. Lest we forget, Grey Worm watched Missandei, the woman he loves, get beheaded. “She has taught him how to be a human being,” said actor Jacob Anderson. “Her and Dany have nurtured him into being human. And then it’s just taken away.”
