Star Wars fans who are skeptical about The Mandalorian, the Disney+ Star Wars TV show premiering in November, can officially rest easy. According to cast member and cult filmmaker Werner Herzog, the show is a “phenomenal achievement.”

Or at least that’s what he told the AP in a recent interview. The 76-year-old Herzog, who’s probably best known as the director behind movies like Grizzly Man and Aguirre, the Wrath of God, signed on to play one of the villains of the series back in March. He confirmed here that he’ll appear in a few episodes of the show’s first season. Watch what he had to say below:

While Herzog admits to never actually having seen a Star Wars film, what he says is certainly enticing. For one, The Mandalorian apparently takes a “practical, real-world approach” to the story, which follows a solo Mandalorian gunfighter years after the events of Return of the Jedi. Given the types of characters we’ll follow during The Mandalorian—many of whom will likely fall into the roguish archetype—it’s comforting to know the series will be honest and down to Earth.

"Mandalorian was filmed not like all the other Star Wars or other big event films — green screen, green screen everywhere — and the camera motion-control moving there. All of a sudden you have a phenomenal step forward. As an actor, you see the entire planet on which you are. You see the landscape. You see the formation. The camera, that could even be hand-held and move in between us, sees the same landscape. It’s not green-screen and artificiality. It brings movie-making back where it should be. It’s a phenomenal, phenomenal achievement."

That’s promising for fans, especially ones who are interested in the setting and world-building of the Star Wars films. It’ll be satisfying to get an in-depth look at parts of the galaxy only briefly touched on in the movies.

Herzog also suggested that the new series will introduce new lore to the series. If done well, it could truly revitalize the Star Wars landscape, opening up a whole realm of new possibilities.

Of course, we’ll have to wait until the series premieres on November 12 to see if the new content is done well — and if Herzog is right about The Mandalorian being a “phenomenal achievement.” But with high praise and talented actors and directors onboard, it’s easy to be hopeful.
