Avengers: Endgame sinks Titanic at the global box office

Avengers: Endgame is making history, literally. In just two weeks, the highly-anticipated Marvel movie has managed to make over $2.3 billion in the global box office (check out how it compares to old and new movies at Box Office Mojo) and has officially surpassed James Cameron’s Titanic to claim the title of second highest grossing movie of all time. Speaking as someone who watched Titanic in the theaters a whopping 14 times when it first came out, I didn’t think that would ever happen.

So what’s in first place? That would be James Cameron’s (this guy is killing it) Avatar, which made nearly $2.7 billion worldwide back in 2009. Is it possible that Endgame can make its way to the top? That is yet to be seen, but at the rate it’s going, I wouldn’t be shocked. In any case, Cameron himself took to social media to congratulate the team at Marvel for accomplishing this milestone:

Of late, Cameron has been talking about “superhero fatigue,” so it’s good of him to come forward and acknowledge the situation. Bravo, Cameron. Now, the race to beat Avatar continues!

While we’re talking about Endgame, we must discuss what the Russo brothers, who directed the movie, had to say on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz. For anyone who has NOT seen Avengers: Endgame please stop reading because I’m about to enter some SPOILER territory and it would kill me to ruin this particular part for you.

Okay, with spoiler warning out of the way, let’s talk.

I’m sure you all remember the moment Cap finally picked up Thor’s hammer, because when it happened pretty much everyone in every single movie theatre across the world joyfully screamed in unison. It is something fans have waited a long time to see (well, since Avengers: Age of Ultron, where he managed to budge it ever so slightly). It was simply a wonderful fan moment we will never forget.

However, however, the Russos had something interesting to share about it. According to them, Cap could have lifted Thor’s hammer a long time ago. Say what?! They explain that it didn’t happen anytime before Endgame because Cap didn’t want Thor to feel bad, and plus saving it for the “final” movie made way more sense.

How does Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon feel about this? Are the Russos going all J.K. Rowling on us?
