Fashion is Coming: Examining the costumes of “The Last of the Starks”
Brienne’s robe
“The Last of the Starks” is one of the few times over the course of Game of Thrones that fans get to see Brienne wearing something other than armor. It’s a rare occasion, and it emphasizes her vulnerability during this episode. Brienne has always been very guarded by nature. Although it’s clear she cares for Podrick and the Stark sisters, she’s not one to openly show affection or emotion. She’s more reserved, and her constant coverage shows that she’s always on defense.
But Brienne has always had a soft spot where Jaime Lannister is concerned, and their feelings for one another become abundantly clear during “The Last of the Starks.” The two finally get together, a triumphant moment for their characters and the fans watching…at least until it becomes clear that Jaime’s going to hightail it back to King’s Landing, either to kill Cersei or to protect her from her enemies.
And when Jaime leaves, viewers get a true taste of Brienne’s vulnerability. She’s opened herself up to Jaime in a way that’s she’s never opened up to anyone, only to discover that he’s leaving her behind for Cersei. And even if he is going to kill his sister, it’s still pretty upsetting for Brienne, who probably realizes that Jaime’s unlikely to make it back from King’s Landing. When she chases Jaime outside in her robe, she’s desperate to stop him from going forward with this decision. Her armor is gone, literally and figuratively.
