Fashion is Coming: Examining the costumes of “The Last of the Starks”
Grey Worm and Missandei’s dragon brooches
Grey Worm and Missandei are two of Daenerys’ most loyal followers, and they show their support for her through their accessories. With the dragon brooches the two of them wear just about everywhere, there’s no questioning whose side they’re on. They’ll stand by Daenerys through thick and thin. Missandei proves that beyond a shadow of a doubt in “The Last of the Starks.”
The pin is most notable for Missandei during this episode, as her dedication to Daenerys is ultimately what gets her killed. But Missandei’s loyalty to her queen has never wavered, even as she stands atop the gates of King’s Landing, probably knowing she is about to die. In her final moments, Missandei shows no regret about following Daenerys, a testament to her strength and dedication.
Also noteworthy is the fact that Cersei attempts to remove Missandei’s connection to Daenerys prior to her death. When she’s taken captive, Missandei’s dragon brooch is gone, and Cersei makes the upsetting decision to place Missandei back in chains. The Lannister queen even comments on this fact, a snide remark that attempts to return Missandei to who she was before she joined Daenerys’ court.
But what Cersei doesn’t realize is that Missandei doesn’t need a brooch to be unwavering in her beliefs. This fact becomes clear through her final words before the Mountain takes her life: “Dracarys.” It’ll take more than removing her dragon brooch and putting her back in chains to sway Missandei of Narth. She continues to be the woman who reclaimed her freedom and chose to follow her queen until the very end, regardless of Cersei’s machinations.
