IT was one of the surprise hits of 2017, a horror film about a demonic clown that made superhero movie money at the box office despite costing a fraction of what those kinds of films usually run. It was adapted from the book by Stephen King, who between that and Castle Rock on Hulu and the new Pet Cemetery movie and Amazon’s upcoming Dark Tower show is having a major renaissance.
Actually, I take one thing back: the 2017 IT only adapted half of King’s massive 1986 novel, which follows a group of people living in the seemingly sleepy Maine town of Derry as they confront a mysterious and ancient evil. The book switches back and forth between depicting the adventures of those people when they were kids and after they’re grown up, but the first movie is all about the kids. The upcoming Chapter Two will feature the adult side of things.
That’s much the same approach that ABC took back when it adapted King’s novel as a two-part miniseries back in 1990. Only there, the problem was that the first part, with the kids, was spooky and the second part with the adults was pretty lame. (All of it is quite campy now, although we’ve got to give props to Tim Curry for bringing the energy as the evil Pennywise). Will IT: Chapter Two follow suit? Let’s see if we can tell from the new teaser trailer:
Looking pretty creepy to me!
Also, can I just say that I wish more trailers were done this way? Too often movies give away the game by showing us flashes of just about everything they have to offer; I think more studios should just pick a scene and show it off. I hope you can buy something valuable with my two cents on the matter.
Anyway, that scene, between a grown-up Beverly (Jessica Chastain) and the old woman who now occupies her childhood apartment, is taken pretty directly from the book. If the movie follows the original text, the members of the Losers Club will have split up after their youthful adventures and gone their separate ways, only to reunite in Derry years later. Then things get weird.

One of the admirable things about the 2017 IT was that it drew a lot of interest without big name stars. Things are different this time around. In addition to Chastain, grown-up Bill Denbrough will be played by James McAvoy and grown-up Richie Tozier will be played by Bill Hader, an especially good choice.
IT: Chapter Two hits theaters on September 6.
