Go behind the scenes of “The Bells” with The Game Revealed
By Dan Selcke
From a production standpoint, the siege of King’s Landing was an absolutely epic undertaking. See how the cast and Game of Thrones put it together in the latest episode of The Game Revealed!
I mean, lord, I can’t imagine how difficult it was to put together the action scenes in this episode. From the wall of King’s Landing blowing out onto the Golden Company to the chaos in the streets Cleganebowl, they cover it all. For anyone interested in filmmaking, this is fascinating stuff.
Some interesting bits:
- Ah, so they built the destroyed King’s Landing set first, then built the good set on top of it, and stripped away the finish when it was time to get destructive.
- The cast and crew sing the harmonies to “Lean on Me” between takes of Varys’ execution scene. That is all.
- That’s an interesting note about how some shots mimic ones we saw in the Battle of Bastards, only this time from the perspective of “the bad guys.”
- They burned more people on screen than had ever been burned before. Hooray!
- David Benioff, Dan Weiss, and Emilia Clarke all discuss Daenerys Targaryen’s heel turn, although none of them really say something that satisfies me. Bring on the final episode!
- Pilou Asbæk seems thrilled to get to beat up on Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. It’s “Dane-bowl.”
- If you were thinking that Dany’s attack on King’s Landing resembled the bombing of Dresden, turns out it was intentional.
“What we do for a living is a bit surreal at times,” says stunt coordinator Rowley Irlam. Yep.

By the way, HBO is planning to leave the King’s Landing set up as a tourist attraction and for future film projects. And after you spent that much time and money on it, why wouldn’t you?
