No, the Wachowskis aren’t working on the Matrix reboot…probably

The Matrix debuted in 1999 and changed action movies forever…well, for the next 20 years, at least. With its kinetic camerawork and weighty themes, its influence can be felt in everything from the Fast and the Furious movies to Inception to the John Wick series, the latter of which involves several Matrix veterans, including star Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski, who did stunt work for the original trilogy.

Because this is the age we live in, reports of a Matrix reboot at Warner Bros. have been swirling for a while. The last time we heard anything solid on it was 2017, when it was reported that Zak Penn would be writing the screenplay. But just lately, Stahelski brought the reboot up when talking to Yahoo Movies UK about John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, due out this Friday. “I’m super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved,” he said. “And if it’s anywhere near the level of what they’ve already done, it wouldn’t take more than a call to go, ‘Hey, we want you to be a stunt guy’ and I would probably go and get hit by a car.”

Now that was news, because up until this point it didn’t look like either Lana nor Lilly Wachowski, the directors of the original three movies, would be involved.

Aaaaaand it still looks that way. A representative for Stahelski reached out to /Film to set the record straight. Apparently, Stahelski made his comments in response to “a hypothetical scenario” where the Wachowskis were involved, which they’re not…probably, officially. So basically we still know nothing. I hope this helps.

The Wachowskis never had another hit as big as The Matrix, but they have put out some interesting stuff, including the science fiction epic Cloud Atlas and the cult favorite Netflix show Sense8. For his part, Reeves would totally be up for a return to the world of The Matrix, provided the Wachowskis were involved. And yes, Neo died at the end of the trilogy, but this is a story that revolves artificial realities. There’s always a workaround.
