Game of Thrones Screencap Breakdown: “Episode 806” Trailer
This is it. The last trailer for an episode of Game of Thrones we’ll ever get. It’s also perhaps the briefest episode trailer we’ve ever gotten. Clocking in at 38 seconds and containing only nine shots, this is the definition of a teaser.
It’s ominous as all get out, though. Watch it below:
For the very last time, let’s take a close look at each shot and look for any clues.
Ser Davos and Jon Snow stride through the smoking ruins of King’s Landing. The aftermath of Dany’s slaughter is both visually grotesque and it must be devastating for just about every major character still breathing. Jon and Ser Davos are the best of the best, so you know they can’t stand for this.
Tyrion wanders through the burning horror-scape. As one of Dany’s most loyal followers, you know his heart is broken. Apparently, Varys was right: Tyrion choose his candidate for monarch poorly.
We see the ruins of the burned and half-collapsed Red Keep, where the bodies of Cersei, Jaime, the Hound, the Mountain and Qyburn lie entombed, along with many others. The Iron Throne room is probably still somewhat intact, because Dany needs to sit on the throne amidst the ruins.
Our last teaser graphic. The wonderful music surges.
The pace of the editing accelerates. This silhouette is obviously Arya, walking behind Dany’s Dothraki cavalry as they line up for something.
Arya watches the Unsullied march past. Her eyes are lifted, perhaps observing the Red Keep or Dany on Drogon. You know the girl is pissed.
The Unsullied form up, ready to obey their queen’s orders.
Like Arya, Tyrion watches the proceedings grimly. Like Arya, he’s looking upward. Is Dany addressing her army from the high vantage point we see in the final shot? And whose side is Tyrion on now? He had Varys executed to protect his queen, but he may not have done that if he knew what she was going to do.
The bloodthirsty Dothraki cheer (for Dany, probably) with the wrecked walls of the city behind them. Dany’s followers from Essos are still all in on her.
Overlooking the ruins of King’s Landing, Dany seems to be invincible; she has a dragon, the Dothraki and the Unsullied. If Jon and Davos feel they have no choice to try to stop her now, all they have is what’s left of their decimated Northern army. It seems that the Northerners don’t stand a chance.
But don’t count out Jon, Ser Davos, Tyrion and Arya.
There we have it. The last Game of Thrones trailer. It’s heavy on Dany’s forces reforming amidst the rubble of King’s Landing, plus several looks at Tyrion and Arya. Other than a glimpse of Jon and Ser Davos, we see nothing of the other characters.
While the teaser-trailer is sufficiently gorgeous and haunting — there’s a lot of tension packed in there — I would have liked a little more. Why not throw in a few of those blurry action shots of flying horses or silhouettes swinging swords in furious battles that we can pore over ad ifinitum, or at least more mysteriously intriguing images of more characters?
